Women Who Inspire: Sara Torki
You have a background in Architecture, how did that lead you to design clothing?
My background in architecture has been instrumental in shaping my approach to designing clothing. Architecture is fundamentally about understanding space, form, and function, and these principles are directly applicable to fashion design. As an architect, precision and attention to detail are paramount. These skills are equally important in fashion design, where every stitch, seam, and cut can affect the overall look and functionality of a garment. My architectural training has honed my ability to focus on these details meticulously. I strive to create structures that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also timeless. This philosophy translates to my clothing designs, where I aim to create pieces that are classic and versatile, transcending fleeting fashion trends.
Your crisp attention to detail, and simplified aesthetic is very powerful in your clothing, as well as interior design, can you share where you draw your inspiration from?
My inspiration comes from a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, historical insights, and modernist principles. This diverse range of influences allows me to create designs that are both simple and sophisticated, with a focus on detail and timeless appeal. Minimalist Art and Architecture: Minimalism, with its focus on simplicity and functionality, deeply influences my aesthetic. The works of architects like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and designers like Dieter Rams emphasize 'less is more,' which resonates in my designs. This philosophy helps me create pieces that are understated yet impactful, prioritizing quality over quantity.
I saw some previews that you're also designing furniture, are you able to speak to that at all? if so I can add a question that asks about your future ventures.
Absolutely, I'd be happy to speak about my furniture design work and future ventures. Offering custom and bespoke furniture design services is something I’m particularly passionate about. This allows me to work closely with clients to create pieces that are tailored to their specific needs and preferences, ensuring a perfect fit for their space and lifestyle. Ultimately, my goal is to combine my clothing and furniture pieces into a single, high-quality lifestyle boutique. This boutique will offer a curated selection of timeless, versatile, and sustainable designs that reflect my holistic approach to living well. By integrating both clothing and furniture, I aim to create a unique and immersive shopping experience where customers can explore and appreciate the synergy between fashion and interior design. This concept allows me to showcase my full creative vision and offer a cohesive lifestyle brand that embodies elegance, functionality, and sustainability.
With such a strong aesthetic, how do you select your jewelry?
The primary goal is to ensure that accessories and jewelry harmonize with the overall design. I look for pieces that echo the simplicity, elegance, and timeless quality of my clothing and furniture. This might involve selecting minimalist jewelry with clean lines or accessories that feature natural materials. Just as in my clothing and furniture designs, I prioritize functionality and versatility in accessories and jewelry. I prefer pieces that can be worn in multiple ways or adapted to different styles, enhancing their practicality and timelessness. The Flow Ring Set compliments that philosophy perfectly.
Creativity takes nurturing, what are some of the things you do to practice self-care and recharge?
Creativity indeed requires nurturing, and self-care plays a crucial role in maintaining a fresh and inspired mind. Traveling to new places and immersing myself in different cultures is a fantastic way to gain new perspectives and inspiration. Experiencing different architectural styles, local crafts, and cultural traditions enriches my creative palette and sparks new ideas. Practicing mindfulness and meditation helps me stay grounded and focused. Taking time each day to meditate, even for a few minutes, allows me to center my thoughts, reduce stress, and maintain a calm and clear mind. Networking and collaborating with other designers, artists, and creatives is incredibly inspiring. Sharing ideas, discussing challenges, and working on collaborative projects helps me stay motivated and opens up new avenues for inspiration.
Do you have a creative philosophy that helped you stay creative throughout the years?
Absolutely, this philosophy is centered around a few key principles that guide my work and personal growth:
Embracing Simplicity. Simplicity is at the core of my creative approach. I believe that clear, uncomplicated designs can often be the most powerful and timeless. Stripping away the unnecessary elements allows the true essence of a piece to shine through, whether it's in architecture, clothing, or furniture design.
Form Follows Function. This classic design principle emphasizes that the shape of a building or object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose. I apply this philosophy to ensure that every design element serves a purpose and enhances the user experience, making my creations both beautiful and practical.
Balance and Harmony. Achieving balance and harmony in design is essential. I strive to create a sense of equilibrium in my work, whether it’s through proportions, colors, or materials. This balance extends to my personal life, where I seek a harmonious integration of work, rest, and play.
Collaboration and Community. Creativity thrives in a collaborative environment. I value working with other creatives, sharing ideas, and learning from each other. Building a community of like-minded individuals fosters inspiration and support, enhancing the creative process.
In this context, I must mention my partners in business, Parisa Habibi at OTE Studio and Mona Radfar at Haus and Pearl, the furniture business. Their support and inspiration have been invaluable, and our teamwork is a big key to our success.
Mindfulness and Presence. Being present and mindful in each moment allows me to fully engage with the creative process. This mindfulness helps me to see the details, appreciate the subtleties, and stay connected to my work and inspiration.
By adhering to these principles, I’ve been able to maintain a consistent flow of creativity and inspiration throughout the years. They not only guide my work but also support my personal growth and well-being, ensuring that my creativity remains vibrant and sustainable.
